FAQs

What sizes or scales are your storage boxes designed for?
TrainTote boxes are designed primarily for HO & N scale trains with other popular modeling scales coming soon. Each box includes adjustable inserts to help you create the right fit for your collection.
Can I store trains standing up or lying flat?
Yes! TrainTote storage boxes are built to protect your models whether they’re placed upright or on their sides. This flexibility helps prevent damage to delicate parts like couplers, handrails, and ladders.
How many train cars fit in a single box?
Capacity depends on the size of the cars and how you arrange them. On average, each box holds 12–20 HO scale freight cars or a mix of locomotives and rolling stock. Adjustable dividers let you customize the layout to fit longer or taller items.
Do the boxes include padding or dividers?
Every TrainTote box comes with protective foam and removable partitions to keep your models secure during transport or storage. You can easily reposition the inserts based on the size and shape of your equipment.
Is the material safe for long-term storage?
Yes. All materials used in TrainTote products are selected to be safe for your models over time. The foam is non-abrasive and acid-free, and the box design keeps dust, light, and moisture exposure to a minimum.
Can TrainTote boxes be stacked or transported easily?
Definitely. Our boxes are lightweight yet durable and built to stack securely. They also slide directly into the TrainTote Carrying Case, making it easy to transport your collection to train shows, club meets, or storage shelves.
Are TrainTote boxes only for trains?
Not at all! While they’re made for model trains, these boxes are also great for storing small modeling supplies like strip wood, styrene, wiring, tools, or even parts from other hobbies.
How should I prepare my models before placing them in the box?
For best results, we recommend:
  • Wrapping each model in soft, lint-free material (acid-free tissue works well).
  • Using the included foam inserts to reduce shifting.
  • Labeling compartments for easy identification.
What’s the best way to store the boxes themselves?
Keep your TrainTote boxes in a cool, dry location away from extreme temperatures or humidity. A shelf, closet, or cabinet works well—especially if you use the carrying case to keep everything organized.
How long will a TrainTote box last?
With normal use, TrainTote boxes are made to last for years. The materials resist wear and tear from stacking, handling, and regular transport, giving you peace of mind that your collection is well protected.
